In recent weeks, members of the Genocide Awareness Project (GAP), an pro-life group external to the University of Calgary, have appeared unannounced on University property with graphic, false and misleading images and pamphlets against abortion.
The Women’s Studies and Feminist Club executive team has heard from many students who are concerned about the resurgence of GAP, especially as GAP is now operating apparently outside University regulations, allowing them to appear without warning on campus green spaces and inside buildings.
The WSF executive team shares these concerns. We are currently in communication with Campus Security, as well as members of the Student’s Union and administration, seeking to have a meeting with them in order to get clarification regarding their response to this situation, and will report back with their reply.
We have also heard from students who have experienced verbal and physical harassment from GAP protesters, and want to bring these experiences to the attention of the University. If you have experienced harassment or other harms due to GAP, you can submit a description of your experience through this form, with the option to submit anonymously.
As well, to ensure that we are ready to mobilize a counter protest if GAP returns again, we will be making pro-choice posters during our End of Year Feminist Rage Night at LDL, Friday, April 1 from 6:30-9:00pm. We will have materials with us, but everyone is welcome to drop by and bring their own materials, or donate old posters. We will have another poster-making session next week, date and time to be announced. These posters will be stored by WSF on-campus so that we will have immediate access to them on days when GAP appears on campus.
If you need support, peer support volunteers are available at the Women’s Resource Centre (MSC 482) and Q Centre (MSC 210) Monday-Friday 8:30am – 4:30pm. You can also call the Distress Centre at 403-266-HELP.
